I am often contacted by visitors who would like to buy dolls they have seen in the picture galleries. But all of these dolls have been made as part of projects or have been pre-ordered a long time before they were made. Due to lack of time I only make a very limited number of dolls each year, but I have decided to make some of these dolls available on Feltmaking.com as “Doll of the month”.
This month the snow-leopard is doll of the month. As it very often is the case, the inspiration to make this animal came, when I found a piece of wool that already had felted on the sheep to a shape that gave the idea to the snow leopard. The piece is from a Norwegian wild sheep that lives year round in the mountains. It is an old breed that still has the original ability to loosen the fleece in one piece. This piece was long and narrow and had a few black spots that gave the idea to a snow-leopard.
When I work with pieces of wool like that, I call it the “opposite technique” because I first have the surface and then I must make a shape and put it inside this piece of wool and sculpture it to the position I want the animal to get. In a way it tells itself more how it will end to be, than the usual way of sculpting an animal. It also gets a special softness that makes it more alive when you hold it. The snow leopard went to Norway with me this month as an example on my course there, on how to use the wool from the wild sheep.
The leopard is 45 cm long included the tail – and 15 cm high.
The price is $130. This includes shipping. Only the one (pair of) dolls is available so if you click on the “Buy Now”-link and the dolls has already been sold you will get an error message. Click below if you would like to buy the doll. You will be taken to the website of PayPal where you can pay by credit card (you don’t need a PayPal-account).
