I am often contacted by visitors who would like to buy dolls they have seen in the picture galleries. But all of these dolls have been made as part of projects or have been pre-ordered a long time before they were made. Due to lack of time I only make a very limited number of dolls each year, but I have decided to make some of these dolls available on Feltmaking.com as “Doll of the month”.
This winter-woman is made with a technique that I need very special wool for. The wool comes from the little Norwegian wild mountain sheep that is one of the few original sheep races that has kept the ability to loosen the whole fleece every year when the new wool starts to grow. That gives the wool a quality that makes it possible to work with as if it was clay. I take little dots of wool directly from the raw fleece and start to sculpture with it by adding more and more wool to the basic shape and needle it on and then while I work the wool nearly decides where the leg comes and the arm a.s.o. so I never know how it ends and how the figure will sit or lie.
When I first started with this technique I made pixies with it and it is a lot of fun to see little funny pixies emerge. In Norway they did not care about that wool because it can´t be used for clothes or shoes as it has some very stiff black short fibers between the soft short grey ones. But then the last few years I and the Norwegian felt maker Karin Svarstad started to make experiments with the wool and I love to use it for my figures and animals. Karin makes wet felted things like bags and birds with it.
So this grey thin winter woman is made of that kind of wool.
She is 40 cm long.
The price of her is $150. This includes shipping. Only the one dolls is available so if you click on the “Buy Now”-link and the dolls has already been sold you will get an error message.
Click below if you would like to buy the doll. You will be taken to the website of PayPal where you can pay by credit card (you don’t need a PayPal-account).
